Hardware and agility: the beauty and the beast – Amparo Echeverria

Hardware and agility: the beauty and the beast? Experiences from Schneider Electric!

Description

As for today, there is no doubt that scrum is an effective framework that enables teams to respond quickly to changing customer needs and to improve their products iteratively. But… when it comes to the development of hardware products in a French multinational in the energy management sector… do the scrum principles still apply? Yes, it works!

Now, how can the HW development process be adapted to take advantage of agile principles? Can cross-functionality be applied? HW development presents very particular challenges that need to be considered when applying agile methods. Practices like frequent stand-up meetings to maintain alignment and collaboration, creating long term plans only at a high level, and breaking (and planning) the work into shorter time boxes do help the HW teams focus and meet expectations.

However, some agile practices don’t translate by the book to the HW development.
In this presentation we will share our experiences running the agile transformation from Schneider Electric Home & Distribution Europe. As a global specialist in energy management and automation in more than 100 countries, Schneider Electric has a long history of agile practices for the development of its products worldwide and we had the honor of being part of this change process. There have been victories and challenges, successes, and learnings. All in all, a fascinating journey, which we will be presenting to you!
